Hi Sergi! What are the characteristics of Spanish football?
Hola! For me the main characteristic of Spanish football is to use the space and time in the best way possible. This is why we usually play from our defending line that can create and/or have the most time and space. If the defenders can move the opponents, space is created for the midfielders. From there the midfielders use the space to find the best way to attack.
I want to underline that the Spanish style of play, what is known as “tiki taka”, is not about passing for the sake of passing, it’s about moving the opponents by passing the ball to us the space and create an opportunity to score. Therefor, one of the most important aspects to practice is the player’s perception – the key for making a good decision. This is also prioritised in Djurgården Academy all the way from U10 to U19.
What do you think the strengths are with the way that Spain plays football?
The style of football means that Spain usually controls the game, not necessarily win, but have possession of the ball, decide the pace and try to be in the attacking half with the ball under control. As said, this does not guarantee a victory, for that you have to score as well not only have the ball.
What can the players that participate expect during the ”Spain week”?
First and most the football sessions will be with the ball, as we practice in Spain. Added to that the players will work on possession games and collective (team) actions. Football is a collective sport, where we are trying to improve the individual player through collective actions.
At the end of the week, what do you think and hope these 9-12 year-olds will have learned during the week?
The players will learn how to put themselves in a good position on the pitch, they will work on their body orientation and on their perception (how they receive information), take decisions and use time and space in the best way possible.
Last but not least, how will Spain do in the World Cup?
Good question, it’s always hard to predict these big competitions. Losing the “wrong” game could mean going home.
I think that Spain’s squad is strong: one of the best goalkeepers in the world (de Gea), a strong defensive line (Caravajal, Ramos, Pique, Alba), amazing midfielders (Iniesta, Silva, Isco, Koke, Busquets), and decent strikes (although not the strongest) in players like Diego Costa and Morata for instance. Like mentioned football is about scoring, weaker strikers could therefor be decisive, at the same time our clear game idea and some really amazing players should help to do a great World Cup.
I think Spain will reach the semi-finals. After this round there are a lot of details that are decisive that cannot be predicted like injuries, tiredness, red cards, penalties etc. But it’s this that makes football so exciting – the fact that it cannot be predicted!
A greetings to the players, please!
Join the Spanish week of the Academy camp, it will be a great week! I will really enjoy being part of the preparations and sure that the coach team will do a great job to introduce the Spanish style of football to the participating players!
