After 6 weeks of pre-season training Damlaget managed to play their first match against fellow Division 4 opponents Rotebro IS FF. Having lost to the opposition in both fixtures last season, Damlaget put in a commanding performance to finish clear winners in what proved to be one of the best performances since their reformation back in 2017.
Having put a lot of practice into redeveloping a new structure to their play, the players hard work in training sessions showed through in a fluid performance play full of confidence and underlined the damage team’s can do by keeping the ball on the ground. Despite early nerves, the players grew into the game, demonstrating short sharp passing between the opposition lines, carefully calculated build-up play from defence to midfield and then speed and directness in the final third.
Both goalkeepers were commanding in the goal, looking impenetrable and making solid saves throughout the entirety of the match. The defence worked tirelessly for one another, supporting in cross patterns to cover balls down the line and passing with confidence and composure to release pressure around our own box. Their communication was a stand out aspect of the game and the players took the confidence to drive with the ball from deep on numerous occasions. The midfield provided an excellent defensive cover in front of the backline whilst pulling the strings around the middle of the pitch. They played a range of passes which opened up dangerous attacking channels for the from 4, whilst intelligently building up play again if there was nothing on in front of them. They were the quarterbacks in the middle of the pitch that stuck to their roles and opened up the game in all zones. The front 4 were constantly causing damage with their direct runs, immense pressure and excellent service, a really dangerous weapon which could have yielded more goals if it wasn’t for Rotebro’s excellent central defensive combination. they got back to support the defence and showed confidence when driving the ball forward as well as unlocking neat passing combinations to get behind the opponents.
The squad, already 14 strong for the game, took the opportunity to invite 3 F03 players along and they blended effortlessly into the game. Each player played strong, tough football that combined well with the rest of the team under the pressure of an experienced team. The game was certainly one which will live with them and Damlaget are ever grateful for the passion they should for the team during the 80 minutes and the way in which they combined with all players like regulars who had been training together all season.
To create 13 chances, scores three goals and concede none in the first game of the season, with one new player in the squad, new positions for some and a need to improve cardiovascular levels, was truly an excellent performance. The application and concentration that went into the game, composure shown on the pitch and the communication throughout turned this into a thoroughly exciting team performance full of plenty of positives to build upon. There are always points to work on, which the whole team and coaches know and will address in the coming weeks, but this is certainly a performance that lays claim to our rightful position in Division 4.
With parents and coaches coming to watch the game and the feedback received after the match, things are moving in the right way for the ladies side. Adding in the news of new players showing interest in trying out with the club over the next couple of weeks, means the season is beginning to look even brighter for IK Frej Täby FK Damlaget.
